Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.

Father Ortensio Gionfra's painting style displays great spontaneity and naturalness. His subjects are portrayed from life with a light touch that gives the work a remarkable immediacy. For this reason, the artist does not emphasize the object's volume, which has an almost immaterial consistency, but focuses instead on its fragrance and the effects of light on it. Thus, the color takes on almost pastel tones to reinforce this impression of immediacy and lightness.

Father Ortensio Gionfra was born in Vignarello in 1918 and passed away in 2012. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and then continued his studies in Paris. Upon returning to Italy, he participated in several exhibitions in various Italian cities (Rome, Milan, Turin, Bologna, Bari, Foggia, Viterbo, Rieti, Terni, Naples, Montecatini, Latina, Florence, Sassari, Cagliari, Ascoli Piceno, Brescia, and Verona).
