Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common for contemporary artists to treat the iconography of motherhood without directly linking it to the Christian religion, but rather transfiguring it into a realistic vision featuring simple people.
The work can be considered a beautiful composition in Symbolist style, aimed at exalting the spiritual nature of maternal sentiment. Indeed, the subject, while remaining figurative, is depicted according to canons that completely transcend the sensory world and direct us to an otherworldly dimension. The figures of mother and child have generic features and well-defined plastic volumes, but their consistency is almost swallowed up by the blinding light the artist has imbued this painting with. By virtue of this dazzlement, the entire space becomes abstract, composed of transparent veils of white and blue.
Osvaldo Pivetta was a painter born in 1922 and died in 1981. He painted from a young age and had a difficult life, having to adapt to various jobs to cope with poverty. Initially, he devoted himself to figurative art, then, in the 1960s, he moved towards Informal Art. Exhibitions and success followed, but Osvaldo Pivetta's exploration continued until he developed his signature subjects: sculptural forms bathed in light.
