Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
This work represents a phase in which Osvaldo Sabene distinguished himself with a highly engaging landscape painting style, in which he achieved a perfect balance between magical realism and an impressionistic rendering of sensory detail. Indeed, Sabene works with the concreteness of someone intent on enhancing plastic and formal values. The structure of the landscape and its objects are marked by a thick black line, which creates a sinuous, undulating rhythm in the composition and divides the painting's surface into distinct chromatic zones. There is also a simplification in the description of nature, typical of so-called magical realism. However, in the application of color, Sabene opts for a more dynamic and vibrant brushstroke, avoiding the overly rational and detached nature of that pictorial movement. Thus, the execution is characterized by a freshness and immediacy that bring the landscape to life.
Osvaldo Sabene was born in Monterotondo in 1952 and lives and works in Rome. In 1970, he attended the San Giacomo art school in Rome and simultaneously developed his painting technique with the painter Lino Tardia and the studios of other artists on Via Margutta. He began his painting career by joining Luigi Casieri's art magazine and gallery "Il Marguttone." In 1983, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. For over ten years, he taught mural decoration at a regional institute. Subsequently, he gained extensive experience decorating nationally, including on large surfaces such as villas and churches. In the mid-1990s, his painting style shifted toward American realism, evolving into what can now be described as photorealism.
