P. Ferrari - Landscape

We are faced with a landscape scene. Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. In this case, the scene opens onto a forest crossed by a wide, slowly flowing river, contributing to the idyllic atmosphere with the body of water replicating its surroundings.

The painting's style harks back to the pictorial research that emerged between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While the choice of color may be reminiscent of the Impressionist period, where the artist selected a palette based on the emotions evoked by the weather that colored the landscape, the overall rendering is very concise. Rather than focusing on details, the artist chooses a few broad brushstrokes that reveal mastery even in their simplicity. The predominant color palette is light turquoise, light blue, and green, thus conveying serenity and tranquility thanks also to the muted hues.

P. Ferrari remains for us an anonymous twentieth-century painter. He demonstrates a desire to distance himself from the usual academic style of painting and to pursue a more fluid style, free from the stylistic devices promoted by the old-school masters. He prefers to adopt a new, more mental and philosophical conception of painting, where reality gives way to emotion, opening the door to freely interpreting what the eye perceives, filtering it through the mirror of the soul.
