The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and Modern Ages, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. In Piera Goldstein Bolocan's cityscapes of her native Milan, as in the present work, the quotidian aspect prevails, the frank and sincere realism of everyday life in an urban context. This painter's favorite subjects are hidden corners, old canals, and building facades where time seems to have stood still.

Artist Piera Goldstein Bolocan's depiction of her Milan is based, first and foremost, on a profound realism. Her excellent pictorial technique allows her to convey sensory information with extreme precision. The building facades are depicted in every detail, in a concrete and tangible vision. However, this realism is transfigured into a dimension that is lyrical, yet also dreamlike, precisely to shift the landscape into a place of memory made of immutability and timeless suspension. For this reason, Piera Goldstein Bolocan's pictorial layering is extremely elaborate, laden with atmospheric effects that imbue the objects with vibrations that are also existential. This type of transfiguration is ultimately confirmed by her palette, which relies on a coherent tonal unity of warm colors, defining a landscape that is indeed realist, but seen through the eyes of historical memory.

Piera Goldstein Bolocan is a Milanese painter. She attended the Brera Academy under the guidance of Domenico Cantatore and has exhibited in numerous solo exhibitions. Among her most important exhibitions: Places of Memory, at Villa Litta in Lainate (1993), Trezzo; Paths of Memory, at the Visconti Castle in Trezzo d'Adda (1994); Vaprio, Signs of Memory, at the Municipal Library in Vaprio d'Adda (1997); Between Heaven and Earth, the Abbeys of the Milanese Area, at the “Cascina Grande” Cultural Centre in Rozzano (1998); Meeting with the Abbey of Morimondo, at the Town Hall in Morimondo (2001); The Colours of Memory, at the Guicciardini Space of the Province of Milan (2001- 2002); Milan and its Plains, at the Arengario in Milan (2003); Meeting Milan, at the Milanese Philological Circle (2009).
