Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban, bourgeois settings. In this work by Landi, the ostentatious everydayness of the subjects typical of the post-Macchiaioli Labronica School prevails.
As in his choice of subjects, P. Landi's artistic production also shows a strong affinity with the Labronica School. In particular, we note a clear influence from one of the most important exponents of that group of painters, Renato Natali. Indeed, Landi also displays a total commitment to a language in the post-Macchiaioli tradition. Thus, brushstrokes become more concise, delineating subjects characterized by a concise essentiality. Individual features are reduced in favor of the expressive power of the scene. Even the spatial setting is synthetic, lacking depth. The colors have warm tones that emphasize the effect of light on objects, almost disintegrating the formal values.
The artistic production of the painter P. Landi follows the influence of the Labronica School and the post-Macchiaioli tradition. His painting style shows a clear influence from Renato Natali, with a highly synthetic, spot-based style in which the effect of light on objects prevails.
