Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is part of a pair of panels inspired by famous paintings by Pablo Picasso. The panel, therefore, constitutes a precious tribute to the art of the Spanish master, as it is created with a refined bas-relief technique painted on gold leaf. The subject of this bas-relief, in particular, is inspired by the painting "Harlequin with a Glass," created by Pablo Picasso in 1905. The work depicts the artist himself dressed as Harlequin, leaning against the bar of the Lapin Agile, one of Picasso's favorite cabarets in Montmartre.
The bas-relief panel fully adheres to the Picasso model. The work has a vaguely Symbolist feel, even in its chosen subject (an artist, a circus performer), which, in addition to representing a certain marginalized and derelict humanity, also expresses an unmistakable, mysterious melancholy. Formally, the character's symbolic aura is enhanced by a synthetic representation, conducted through a bold line that empties the volumes and eliminates facial details. In this way, the subject takes on an iconic character, and the work can break away from a simple, contingent representation to take on broader, more hidden meanings. From a chromatic perspective, warm tones prevail in this work, further marking a departure from Pablo Picasso's "blue period."
This work is inspired by a famous painting by Pablo Picasso. Born in Malaga in 1881 and died in Mougins in 1973, he was one of the most important artists in the history of world art. After his initial figurative experimentation in the "Blue" and "Rose" periods, he founded Cubism with Georges Braque. Drawing on the work of Cézanne, Picasso definitively transcended the concept of phenomenon in art to arrive at that of noumenon, breaking down the subject and depicting it from different perspectives. He was an extremely multifaceted artist and produced an impressive number of works during his long career.
