Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is part of a series of gilded silver bas-reliefs inspired by famous paintings by Pablo Picasso. The panel, therefore, constitutes a precious tribute to the art of the Spanish master, as it is created with a refined bas-relief technique. The subject of this work, in particular, is inspired by the painting "Boy Leading a Horse." Created between 1905 and 1906, the work is currently on display at the MOMA in New York.
The bas-relief fully reflects the Picasso model. The work has a vaguely Symbolist feel, even in its chosen subject (an artist, a circus performer), which, in addition to representing a certain marginalized and derelict humanity, also expresses an unmistakable, mysterious melancholy. Formally, the character's symbolic aura is enhanced by a synthetic representation, executed with a bold line that empties the volumes and eliminates facial details. The scene is sparse, with only the two subjects in an undefined landscape. Typical of the "pink" Picasso is a delicate expressionism, which synthesizes the figures with grace and lightness. In this way, the subject takes on an iconic character, and the work can break away from a simple, contingent representation to take on broader, more hidden meanings.
This work is inspired by a famous painting by Pablo Picasso. Born in Malaga in 1881 and died in Mougins in 1973, he was one of the most important artists in the history of world art. After initial figurative experimentation in the "Blue" and "Rose" periods, he founded Cubism with Georges Braque. Drawing on the work of Cézanne, Picasso definitively transcended the concept of phenomenon in art to arrive at that of noumenon, breaking down the subject and depicting it from multiple perspectives. He was an extremely multifaceted artist and produced an impressive body of work throughout his long career.
