Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the work can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The work demonstrates Pablo Picasso's interest in popular subjects linked to Spanish folklore, which he reworked in a pared-down expressionist style with a strong archaic flavor.
This work demonstrates Picasso's extraordinary technical prowess and his distinctive style, even in a graphic composition. The formal means used to delineate the subjects are minimal: a simple, broad, and densely colored black line on a white sheet of paper. In the artistic vision of the Spanish genius, the synthesis of subjects is fundamental in order to extract their true essence—that is, what, beyond the phenomenal data, we know or want to know about what we see. For this reason, Picasso's recovery of the spontaneity of primitive art or children's drawing is important. These are two instinctive attitudes that, in representation, go straight to the true essence of things. It is clear that in this work, given the popular, folkloric, almost tribal theme, a strong primitive aesthetic takes shape. The composition seems to echo the primitive graffiti of some cave. However, Picasso's gesture is free and loose, and with just a few strokes he manages to imbue his figures with a strong personality. Indeed, this is what makes the artistic process of the Spanish genius unmistakable.
Pablo Picasso, born in Malaga in 1881 and died in Mougins in 1973, was one of the most important artists in the history of world art. After his initial figurative experimentation in the "Blue" and "Rose" periods, he founded Cubism with Georges Braque. Drawing on the work of Cézanne, Picasso definitively transcended the concept of phenomenon in art to arrive at that of noumenon, breaking down the subject and depicting it from multiple perspectives. He was an extremely multifaceted artist and produced an impressive body of work throughout his long career.
