Description of the work
Description of the work
The bull in art is a subject with ancient origins, appearing even in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, it also frequently appears in the works of ancient civilizations, particularly the Minoan-Cretan civilization. In contemporary art, Picasso's studies of the bull are famous.
The Palizzi brothers are renowned as artists of an extraordinary nineteenth-century school of painting. Their genre scenes are distinguished by an extraordinary level of refinement, reaching the pinnacle of naturalism. Giuseppe Palizzi is no less renowned, specializing primarily in animal depictions, which he executes with meticulous attention to detail. This cartoon, which, both in terms of its support and format, appears to be a sketch, an artist's exercise, nevertheless demonstrates Palizzi's remarkable pictorial quality. Even with a quicker, more informal approach, he manages to create a lifelike figure of a bull, with a perfectly naturalistic rendering.
Giuseppe Palizzi was born in Lanciano in 1812 and died in Paris in 1888. In Naples, he came into contact with the painters of the Posillipo School. In 1844, he moved to Paris and settled permanently on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest. Landscapes, animals, and genre scenes in general were his favorite subjects, which he executed in a veristic style influenced by the Barbizon School.
