Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
In addition to his genre scenes, Pietro Pantino is known for a series of portraits of girls and boys, often with weeping faces, full of melancholy and empathy for the viewer. Pantino achieves this result primarily through his impeccable formal quality. The subjects are depicted in relaxed, natural poses, often captured in a complex three-quarter pose. The faces exhibit absolute formal perfection, marked by a certain degree of idealization. From a pictorial perspective, the subject matter is compacted in an objectifying interpretation, yet Pantino does not shy away from a certain pictorialism based on transparent glazes, in order to create more dreamy atmospheres.
Pietro Pantino is a painter originally from Palermo, where he was born in 1941. He creates almost exclusively genre scenes inspired by the fin-de-siècle bourgeois world or rural life. His pictorial language is also aligned with his favorite subjects, drawing inspiration from a post-impressionist style in the construction of the image. However, in his series of portraits of children, Pantino demonstrates how his pictorial conception can also be classical and traditional, supported by an impeccable formal quality.
