Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to convey their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation. This work by Paola De Rosa is inspired by a portrait of Josephine Bonaparte, Napoleon's wife.
The aesthetic of this lithograph draws on a classical conception of artistic creation, characterized by a naturalistic rendering of the subject, marked by a strong idealization. Paola De Rosa, in fact, draws on the formal principles of official and court art. For this reason, the lithograph is distinguished by its highly natural depiction of the subject and an overall compositional harmony imbued with a serene and calm idealization. In this portrait of Giuseppina, Paola De Rosa chooses a profile shot, drawing on portraits on ancient coins, again with a philological revival of the Napoleonic era. The portrait is completed with precious decorative motifs.
Paola De Rosa demonstrates a solid academic education and an extraordinary technique that, in addition to pursuing the naturalistic rendering of the subject, allows her to achieve freshness and vivacity through a quick and painterly application.
