Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Paolo Bonetto's works are a clear example of Expressionist landscape. Reality is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with an exercise in reduction that seeks to reach the purest essence of the landscape. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with almost no spatial depth. The brushstrokes delineate the forms in a very instinctive manner. Delving even further into detail, we can see how the artist describes the countryside with a series of almost gestural marks, creating a shifting impasto that transfigures his perception into the paint. Thus, the application of color is dense and material, and although the language used is synthetic and Expressionist, the artist's vision remains connected to phenomenal reality, to its vibrations of light and atmosphere, in a pictorial process that takes the premises of Impressionist and plein air art to their extreme.
Paolo Bonetto was born in Lissone in 1949, where he still lives and works. He began his career as a professional painter in 1970. He studied at the Libera Accademia di Pittura in Nova Milanese, the Scuola di Arti e Mestieri in Bovisio Masciago, and the Famiglia Artistica Lissone "Accademia Gino Meloni." He has received numerous awards in the figurative arts, winning prizes of national importance. Numerous critics and specialized magazines have expressed positive views of the artistic value of his works. Many paintings are included in museums and civic collections, as well as in places of religious worship. Several works are also held in numerous private collections in Italy and abroad. An extensive bibliography documents Bonetto's artistic career, and several monographs have been edited by the artist himself to offer discerning collectors a true understanding of the painter.
