Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
Compared to the predominantly abstract and Cubist style of his landscapes and genre scenes, this vase of flowers reveals Paolo Canetti's post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is compressed entirely into the foreground, allowing no spatial depth. The painter's aim is not to capture the sensory aspect of the subject, but to capture its very essence, its substance. For this reason, Canetti here employs a more pronounced synthesis, taking Impressionism to its extreme, seeking to evoke images through a lyricism of memory. The touch is cursive, yet at the same time rich in vibrations and existential tremors. In this sense, Paolo Canetti's evolution of Impressionist technique in this work should be interpreted as the poetry of life. Each brushstroke captures chromatic and luminous vibrations, simultaneously infusing an unstoppable vital energy even into a static subject like a floral arrangement.
Paolo Canetti was born in 1940 in Milan into a family of painters, and from an early age he cultivated this talent by attending art schools and following in his father's footsteps. Initially drawn to Impressionism, he joined the "Group of Ten" in his early twenties, developing a passion for social issues and addressing them with a new, realistic perspective. His first solo exhibition in Milan was in 1968, and within a few years he was exhibiting in prestigious international galleries, from France to Japan to America. From the very beginning of his artistic career, he revealed a predilection for certain subjects—houses and landscapes, warm colors, and lush nature. After a long period of Cubism, he returned to his original vocation: scenes of social life.
