Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this painting certainly has allegorical meanings and can be defined, in some ways, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. This type of subject can be traced back to the artistic language of late nineteenth-century painters such as Moreau, Bocklin, and Puvis des Chavannes, who, while using a primarily figurative language, developed intellectually complex iconographies, full of symbolic and allegorical references. Similarly, in this painting, the artist Paolo Cianchetti leans toward a figurative language, yet chooses a highly unusual compositional approach: showing the subject from behind. This type of representation undeniably evokes a certain sense of mystery and unresolved expectation.
The formal approach chosen by Paolo Cianchetti for this painting also reflects the Symbolist nature underlying the compositional idea. Indeed, to emphasize the sense of mystery and suspense evoked by the figure seen from behind, Cianchetti chooses a clear and concrete representation. For this reason, the work is depicted in a figurative style bordering on hyperrealism. In this sense, a comparison can be made with Magritte's famous bowler-hatted figures, which exhibit the same dry figurative style. However, Cianchetti avoids the paradoxes typical of the Belgian master, leaving his work in a mysterious dimension that, nevertheless, fully reflects a plausible reality.
Born in Rome in 1964. Self-taught, he studied Art History at La Sapienza University in Rome. He explored the psychodiagnostic and therapeutic potential of creative action and graduated as an Art Therapist with a Psychophysiological Orientation. His works, beyond formal and aesthetic research, primarily reflect—through modern, often multi-material, painting techniques, primarily oil on canvas—a striving for a personal existential solution, open to dreams and the desire for every possible harmony. He has exhibited in various solo and group shows in the Rome area, including the Galleria Gard, the Laboratorio 89 in Rome, and the Studio D'Arte Urbinelli in Grottaferrata, where he currently teaches drawing courses applied to various artistic techniques.
