Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The artist Paolo da Norcia is famous for his paintings featuring charming little friars, portrayed in a variety of everyday situations, against the backdrop of imaginative medieval villages.
Artist Paolo da Norcia never fails to showcase his creative and imaginative streak. The evocative image of the medieval village is always charged with magic, but also with a touch of metaphysics. Indeed, the entire surface of the work is occupied by a glimpse of the ancient building, constructed as a modular repetition of solids, in a play of symmetries and mirrored surfaces. In this sense, the use of light is truly evocative, adding a lively rhythm of two-tone tones with alternating shadows. Furthermore, the pictorial layering is compact, following a dry and magical realism typical of metaphysical movements. Against this backdrop, so rational as to seem fairytale-like, the usual friars move, also arranged geometrically, ironically engaged in skiing on the snow.
Paolo da Norcia was born in Cuneo in 1953. A Franciscan, his real name is Paolo Perotti. Born into an artistic family, his father, Marco Perotti, was one of the most esteemed figurative artists of the 20th century and inspired him to paint from an early age. Paolo da Norcia later refined his education by attending the studios of figures such as Morando, Treccani, Brindisi, and Caffé. His in-depth study of the rationalists and metaphysicians (De Chirico, Sironi, Carrà) contributed to the definition of the artist's expressive language, a proponent of metaphysical primitivism. His paintings are composed of highly lucid fields, with the upper portion of the work depicting a relaxing turreted village and the lower portion depicting cultivated or snow-covered fields.
