Description of the work
Description of the work
This work is particularly interesting, as it demonstrates a type of experimentation not often seen in Paolo Da San Lorenzo's work, drawing him closer to the Spatialist aesthetics of the 1960s. Indeed, we note a desire to transcend the surface of the canvas for a perceptual experience that definitively engages Space. In this work, Paolo da San Lorenzo resolves this tension through spiraling movements reminiscent of Roberto Crippa's work.
Thus, the spiral is configured as an abstract, geometric figure which, tending toward three-dimensionality, can transcend the two-dimensionality of the work and radiate energy into the very space of the viewer. In the painting in question, the spiral is created by the artist with a vibrant stroke, tracing orbits that create their own concrete existence on the surface of the work. The concentric movement and dynamism of the subject, already developed by the spiral itself, is further emphasized by the pictorial layering that shapes the rest of the painting. Indeed, the artist tends to bring out the energy radiating from the work by adopting a highly agitated gestural style in the execution.
Paolo da San Lorenzo was born in San Lorenzo in Campo in 1935 and passed away in 2022. His artistic training took place primarily in Paris, where he was introduced to post-Cubism. He began exhibiting his works in a series of shows not only in Italy but also throughout Europe. In 1990, his work was included in the Mondadori catalog. He participated in numerous international art fairs from 1999 to 2014, including Miart Milan, Arte Fiera Bologna, Arte Verona, the Australian Contemporary Art Fair Melbourne, St'Art Stasbourg, and KunstRai Amsterdam.
