Description of the work
Description of the work
Paolo da San Lorenzo's entire oeuvre displays a marked expressionist vocation, emphasizing the expression of emotion. Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its emotional states to the world and flaunt them with passion. For this reason, Paolo da San Lorenzo's subjects are distinguished by a strong existential component made up of "types" and characters, which, formally, translates into a summary rendering of the figures, through a highly nervous and animated line, as well as the use of a violent and anti-naturalistic color palette. These characteristics are already found in the historical avant-garde movements of expressionism: Fauvism and the Die Brucke movement in Germany. But Paolo da San Lorenzo's expressionism takes on a wholly personal and original character, shedding, in its existentialism, any dramatic connotation, aspiring instead to a poetics entirely marked by play and irony.
Paolo da San Lorenzo's artistic language tends to minimize phenomenal reality, but this exercise in reducing sensory data helps the artist go beyond the appearance of things and grasp their true essence. What remains is the spiritual, emotional, and existential concentration of the depicted figure, which the artist seeks to connect with by eliminating any formal frills and leaving only a fanciful trace to identify the subject. Yet Paolo da San Lorenzo, despite his synthesis, does not abandon the playful excitement of his expressionism. Indeed, his strokes are dynamic, powerfully gestural in their primary simplicity. The figures he depicts typically hark back to a pared-down, post-cubism style, inspired especially by the late Picasso. However, in this work, the process of imaginative abstraction is so extreme that it is more ascribed to a surrealist aesthetic. The use of color in the strong hues typical of Paolo da San Lorenzo remains constant.
Paolo da San Lorenzo was born in San Lorenzo in Campo in 1935. His artistic training took place primarily in Paris, where he was introduced to post-Cubism. He began exhibiting his works in a series of shows not only in Italy but also throughout Europe. In 1990, his work was included in the Mondadori catalogue. He participated in numerous international art fairs from 1999 to 2014, including Miart Milan, Arte Fiera Bologna, Arte Verona, the Australian Contemporary Art Fair Melbourne, St'Art Stasbourg, and KunstRai Amsterdam.
