Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. In his pictorial research, the artist Paolo Fedeli achieved a highly elaborate definition of the urban landscape, particularly the metropolitan one.
Paolo Fedeli's urban views are so complex that they simultaneously embody a distinct metropolitan realist spirit, perfectly blended with a decidedly existential connotation of urban space. Indeed, we can see how, on the one hand, the artist tends to lend a sense of instantaneity and immediacy to the scene, with the view's focus centered on the building that establishes the depth of the vanishing point between two diverging streets. Everything has the quality of a unique instantaneity, like a frame extracted from a video recording. This sensation is fueled by Paolo Fedeli's complex pictorial technique. His brushstrokes are extraordinarily vibrant, intent on capturing every single reverberation of light and atmosphere. But the most extraordinary thing is that the artist carries out this process with a very strong expressionist connotation. The objects are almost disintegrated in their forms in a decidedly existential pictorial sense, which, while recording the effects of light and atmosphere, imbues the space with an intense sense of experience. All this produces a highly aesthetically impactful result, with the metropolitan view constructed through a coherent blend of iridescent colors, simultaneously sulfurous and iridescent, in a tonalism of warm and fiery reflections.
Paolo Fedeli was born in Tuscany in 1957. He attended the Siena Art Institute, earning a Master of Arts degree. He has held numerous solo exhibitions, and his works are included in numerous public and private collections. His work has been reviewed in national and international magazines and newspapers. He has also participated in major national group art exhibitions, earning mentions and recognition from critics and painters. Studying light and color in his paintings, he discovers an optical, almost magical truth. He almost conceives of an organization of the painting in such a way as to recreate reality, full of existential experience.
