Paolo da San Lorenzo - Christ

A popular iconography throughout the history of Western art, the Crucifixion has its origins in the early Christian era and has developed over the centuries, culminating in the most recent expressions of contemporary art. The traditional iconography of Jesus on the cross has countless variations, from the simplest, featuring only the crucified Christ, to the version accompanied by the "mourners," the Madonna and Saint John the Evangelist. In the Middle Ages, Crucifixion scenes began to become increasingly elaborate: thieves' crosses were added, and gradually more and more figures were added, until they became the subject of large choral scenes. It is often accompanied by symbolic elements, such as the presence of the sun and moon or Adam's skull beneath Christ's cross (which signifies the redemptive action of Christ's Passion in the face of original sin).

In this work, where Paolo da San Lorenzo tackles a religious theme, the artist seems to emphasize his gestural component over his geometric one. The subject is almost distorted into an expressionist language, and the subject is only discernible through a faint outline. Thus, the painter's gesture dominates, and, when combined with the work's iconography, it acquires a distinctly religious significance. The entire composition is resolved with broad brushstrokes of dense color that extend over a refined, elemental figuration.

Paolo da San Lorenzo was born in San Lorenzo in Campo in 1935. His artistic training took place primarily in Paris, where he was introduced to post-Cubism. He began exhibiting his works in a series of shows not only in Italy but also throughout Europe. In 1990, his work was included in the Mondadori catalogue. He participated in numerous international art fairs from 1999 to 2014, including Miart Milan, Arte Fiera Bologna, Arte Verona, the Australian Contemporary Art Fair Melbourne, St'Art Stasbourg, and KunstRai Amsterdam.
