Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
Paolo da San Lorenzo's compositions are based on a search for pure lines and pure colors. Reality is assimilated by the artist and reconstructed through a geometric rationalization that reduces everything to the bare minimum of sensibility. While the color rests on a dense, painterly matrix, Paolo da San Lorenzo's lines are slender and elegant, charged with expressive movement. In this work, however, Paolo da San Lorenzo pushes the process of abstraction further, arriving at an informal aesthetic in which the painterly, gestural approach prevails over the geometric structures themselves.
Paolo da San Lorenzo was born in San Lorenzo in Campo in 1935. His artistic training took place primarily in Paris, where he was introduced to post-Cubism. He began exhibiting his works in a series of shows not only in Italy but also throughout Europe. In 1990, his work was included in the Mondadori catalogue. He participated in numerous international art fairs from 1999 to 2014, including Miart Milan, Arte Fiera Bologna, Arte Verona, the Australian Contemporary Art Fair Melbourne, St'Art Stasbourg, and KunstRai Amsterdam.
