Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to convey their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation. In this work, Parini juxtaposes the female portrait, the central subject, with the still life theme, with the basket full of fruit visible in the background.
As we can see in this work, the artist Parini employs a decidedly expressionist language. The traditional iconographic themes of portraiture and still life are rendered with a highly concise graphic style. The forms are thus subjected to a process of abstraction and reduction that seeks to focus on the true essence of the things depicted, eliminating sensory data to instead leverage the painter's gestures. This gesture is free to express itself through a loose, animated, yet light touch. The result is a highly incisive representation that, despite the simplicity of the expressive means, possesses great visual power, thanks to the power of color and the painter's gestures.
The artist Parini, as we can deduce from an analysis of this work, is distinguished by a pictorial style that tends toward expressionism, focusing on the essence of the subjects portrayed. His style is based on a subjective interpretation expressed through agitated gestures.
