Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
This work is part of a series of monochrome watercolors showcasing the extraordinary technical skill of landscape painter Pasquale Domenico Cambiaso. The compositions are extremely balanced, unfolding along broad horizontal lines while the objects are lost in the vastness of the landscape. His extraordinary touch, using diluted color to give shape and substance to the landscape elements with just a few quick strokes, is evident. Everything is executed with an extreme lightness and consistency at the same time.
Pasquale Domenico Cambiaso was born in Genoa in 1811 and died in 1894. He trained at the Accademia Ligustica and later moved to Naples, where he likely came into contact with the Posillipo School. He was elected a Ligustica Academician in 1834, exhibiting his works in 1836 and 1837. From 1850 to 1877, he exhibited at the Promotrice. His landscape painting is dominated by a penchant for vedutism and detailed analysis.
