These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The artist Pasquale Pilla drew inspiration primarily from popular genre scenes.

This work is clearly exemplary of the majority of artist Pasquale Pilla's oeuvre. In his research, sensible reality is subjected to a mechanical reconstruction that draws primarily on Cubism, particularly Juan Gris. Like the Spanish master, it is not so much the subject, but the entire space that is the focus of the regular, symmetrical geometric decomposition. The subject, inserted into this reticular space, is influenced by it and its plastic qualities are exalted. The whole is executed with a decidedly dynamic approach.

Pasquale Pilla was born in Foggia in 1933. His paintings are distinguished by their inspiration from the values ​​of rural life. The rural agricultural world is depicted in his works using a language inspired by Expressionism and Cubism, with an abstract and geometric use of color.
