Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
Pasquale Pilla's pictorial language, in this floral series, relies primarily on the expressive qualities of color. The drawn structure and geometric grid are completely dismantled to make way for the force of brushstrokes with a gestural expressiveness typical of Abstract Expressionism. However, Pilla remains firmly anchored to phenomenal reality because even with his colorful brushstrokes, he manages to delineate the essence of the flowers, imbuing them with expressive vigor. In this Expressionist context, color takes on aggressive, Fauvist tones, generating the violent contrasts sought by the painter. The meaning of color, in fact, goes far beyond naturalism and takes on a highly symbolic, evocative, and spiritual significance.
Pasquale Pilla was born in Foggia in 1933. His paintings are distinguished by their inspiration from the values of rural life. The rural agricultural world is depicted in his works using a language inspired by Expressionism and Cubism, with an abstract and geometric use of color.
