Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconographic theme of the Pietà harks back to the "Lamentation over the Dead Christ," a subject that became popular starting in the 14th century. While the "Lamentation" is a group scene featuring more or less fixed figures (Mary, the apostle John, Mary Magdalene, the pious women, Joseph of Arimathea, and Nicodemus), the "Pietà" is a variation, featuring Mary alone with the body of Christ in her arms. In this case, a second female figure is also added.
In this work, Patrizio Zanazzo uses a unique method of modeling the bronze, creating a malleable, almost shapeless mass. This gives the sculptural group a strong dynamism in its sinuous form. The surface is intricately crafted, and the subjects are subjected to anti-naturalistic, expressionistic constraints. This technique almost echoes Michelangelo's unfinished style. Moreover, the great Tuscan master is also echoed, through a certain thematic similarity, in the Bandini Pietà in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Florence.
Patrizio Zanazzo runs a prominent sculpture workshop in Tarquinia. His remarkable technique allows him to explore a variety of styles, from classical to modern. His works are created using a variety of materials: marble, terracotta, bronze, resin, iron, concrete, and plexiglass.
