Description of the work
Description of the work
David is remembered since the beginning of his artistic career for his horses, painted with great
mastery and expressiveness. Always a friend of man, the horse is a symbol of freedom for David,
in fact in most of his works it is represented without a saddle, without bridle and
even with wings.
The group of three horses almost fly over the Venetian lagoon that emerges from the background identified by the
mullioned windows of the buildings in Piazza San Mar
In the vermilion red sky with orange-yellow hues, flying domes appear and the figure
of an angel in the center of the canvas. The horse in the foreground is clearly agitated.
It makes him throw his head back, not by chance he has the saddle and bridle.
The scene described above is a clear reference to the events of the book of Revelation written
from the apostle John, where the fiery red horse is associated with the enemies of God, such as the dragon, and the
black horse symbolizes famine and death associated with war.
