Penner - Horses

A noble animal, a symbol of beauty and harmony, the horse has repeatedly been a prominent subject in the history of art. Since the fourteenth century, its presence has always been obligatory in battle scenes or equestrian monuments, and for painters, depicting it with anatomical precision and naturalistic rendering has always been a challenge.

This work is part of a series in which Penner demonstrates his penchant for playful compositions. The anecdotal subject, drawn from reality, undergoes a process of expressionist transfiguration, predominantly through geometric figures. The fluid, arabesque-like graphic line leads to a rationalization with fairytale-like, almost surreal overtones. The influence of Paul Klee is also evident, especially in the fairytale-like quality of the subjects.
