Description of the work
Description of the work
The Resurrection of Christ is one of the most popular subjects in all of Western sacred art. It represents the culminating moment of Jesus Christ's earthly life, with the complete manifestation of his divine nature and his subsequent ascension into heaven. Since the Middle Ages, we have numerous examples of the Resurrection, with numerous variations. Among the most popular is the one with Christ rising from his tomb holding a crusader standard, while the Roman soldiers on guard appear unconscious. Another well-known version, to which this bas-relief by Fazzini refers, shows Christ already hovering in the air, ready to ascend to the Kingdom of Heaven.
This bas-relief by Pericle Fazzini is exemplary in demonstrating the Grottammare artist's exploration of compositional rhythm rather than an objective description of reality. Indeed, one can note how the representation of Christ is generic, with elongated proportions, marked by a strong iconic character and symbolic connotations. The sculptor is more interested in instilling a frenetic, centrifugal rhythm into the space of the work through the diagonal lines of the thick, jagged vegetation. The description of the landscape also contributes to triggering this movement, with the strong sculptural dynamism that characterizes the entire space of the work. Fazzini leaves not a single centimeter of the frame static, traversed by the sculptural elements of jagged rocks and branches. In this way, the composition creates a veritable thrust that accentuates the ascending motion of the risen Christ at the center of the bas-relief.
Pericle Fazzini was born in Grottammare in 1913. His entire career was spent in Rome, where he passed away in 1987. He trained at the Scuola Libera del Nudo. His first major commission came in 1931, when he won a competition to create a monument to Cardinal Dusmet. In 1938, he opened his studio on Via Margutta, where he would remain for the rest of his life. He participated in the Rome Quadrennial and the Venice Biennale. His sculptures are held in important national and international collections, including the Hakone Open Air Museum in Japan, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, the Tate Gallery in London, the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Momat in Tokyo, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Montreal.
