Description of the work
Description of the work
We are faced with a still life. Still life originates when objects from domestic life begin to occupy the foreground of the pictorial space and become the protagonists of the narrative. Although the painting of inanimate objects was already known in Greek and Roman times, it underwent a strong development in the 16th century, becoming a pictorial genre in its own right and highly sought after, especially from the early 17th century onwards. It was only during this period that this figurative typology acquired an autonomy that allowed it to become an object of research in its own right.
In this particular painting, we see a table in the foreground, on which lies an overturned wicker basket, from which fish and lobsters spill out onto the table. Next to these inanimate creatures is a cut lemon.
This painting can be described as a classic example of twentieth-century figurative painting, as if marking a return to order after the experiences of the avant-garde. The painting displays a strong realism in its depiction of reality. It's not about photographic realism, but rather each inanimate object is individually and meticulously explored; consider the delicate highlights on the fish scales, which attempt to impart a touch of light. We can't pinpoint a single source of light, but rather a general luminosity that pervades the representation.
The artist signed the painting in the lower right corner. However, since the painting is not accompanied by a certificate of authenticity or similar from a gallery, we can only determine the artist's surname, and it is not possible to link the signature to a specific painter's CV. It is clear that the painter has an academic background, or rather, that he is rooted in classical painting teachings, objectively capturing reality, without, however, adopting the new paths pioneered by the 20th-century avant-garde.
