Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of this work was conceived through a process of citation. In the phenomenology of artistic movements, citation consists of reproposing an image from the past, from the historical-artistic tradition, recontextualizing it according to the artist's sensibility. Citation has been and is transversal to various contemporary artistic movements, such as Surrealism, Metaphysical Art, and Anachronism. Peter Maria Herk's citationist production is nourished by diverse stimuli and creative processes that lead to consistently original and surprising results.
In this work, Peter Maria Herk's artistic process consists of selecting images from the art of the past (from the 15th-16th centuries or even earlier) and reconfiguring them in his paintings. These are fragments of historicized images that, through the collage technique, acquire a hyperrealist appearance. From this starting point, Peter Maria Herk leads the viewer on a journey into the ancient world, to discover a connection with our roots, becoming a conduit for a strong connection between past and present. All this, however, presupposes the artist's reworking, in order to avoid a simple exercise in pedantry. From this perspective, Herk imbues his quotation with new meaning, first and foremost by giving a precise artistic value to the pictorial material (a fundamental element in contemporary aesthetics). Thus, the entire ancient image takes on a new meaning, thanks to the pictorial intervention which, as always, in Peter Maria Herk is inspired by the gestures of Abstract Expressionism.
Peter Maria Herk was born in 1958 in Augsburg, Germany. He studied art at Helmut Baumgart's studio in Freiburg. He currently lives and works in Corinaldo, in the Marche region. His works are held in prestigious private collections and important museums.
