Description of the work
Description of the work
A calm sea on the horizon, embracing a city center, forms the backdrop to a scene of everyday life. Laundry hanging on a terrace, in its ordinary state, speaks of his island, Ischia. The island, and specifically Florio, his hometown, was for him a place of peace, and he paid homage to it throughout his artistic career. In the canvas, one can sense his love for his homeland, which lives on through his painting, transporting us to a dimension that predates the advent of tourism.
Michele Petrone's style can be defined as naive. Naive art refers to a simple and spontaneous pictorial style that features scenes of everyday life, bucolic scenes, or even dreamlike scenes. Technically, the drawing and painting are rough, often lacking perspective to convey the elemental nature of the depicted object. Petroni precisely depicts an almost childlike image, a tale filled with decorative elements and details.
Michele "Peperone" Petroni (1940 – 2011) was an artist born and raised in Forio, a small town on the island of Ischia. Revered throughout the world, Petroni was self-taught, and only a few lines from his handwritten manuscript exist that describe his life and art. He generously bequeathed numerous oil paintings and collages to his hometown, a source of inspiration for his work.
