Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
The scene displays a rather traditional layout: the composition is based on a precise drawing that constructs a spatial box and indicates its depth. Through drawing, the artist also manages to emphasize the figures' plastic qualities, which are highlighted volumetrically.
Philippone, the artist, displays a high level of academic technique. She remains faithful to the printmaking genre, creating a completely objective composition using an illustration technique. The artist's goal is to reproduce as many details as accurately as possible and evoke a sense of intimacy and curiosity in the viewer.
