Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
As we can see from this portrait, Pier Antonio Gariazzo's painting style is extraordinarily modern, essentially in line with the tastes of the Belle Époque. The portrait takes into account the sensitive element, which is faithfully captured by the painter. The pictorial application, however, is complex and dynamic, with long brushstrokes outlining the figure. The artist seeks to convey the complexity of human vision in a blurred frame, rich with atmospheric vibrations.
Pier Antonio Gariazzo was a Turin-born artist and filmmaker, born in 1879 and died in 1964. He graduated in medicine in 1902, but completely abandoned the medical profession to pursue art. He then moved to Rome, where he attended the studios of Bruschi and Vitalini, then to Belgium, and then returned to Turin, where he studied with Giacomo Grosso. He participated in the Promotrice Torinese in 1899 and in the Turin Quadrennials in the 1960s. He participated in many important solo exhibitions in Paris, Berlin, London, and Brussels, in Milan in 1939, Turin in 1940, and in Rome, Milan, and Cremona in 1941.
