Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. For the Livorno painters of the Livorno School, linked to the post-Impressionist and post-Macchiaioli traditions, landscape was a primary subject, often inspired by evocative images of the port of Livorno, along with genre scenes depicting everyday and popular life.
Like all other representatives of the Livorno School, Francesco Maria Pieri, in his works, places a clear predominance on color over drawing, fully embracing the impressionistic and plein air concept of painting. However, unlike other painters, we note in Pieri a greater commitment to sensory detail and a more accentuated naturalism compared to the expressionistic and synthetic style of other artists. Pieri's compositions, therefore, are distinguished by a more pronounced formal attention, resulting in a more harmonious and classical landscape. Despite this, his construction of objects remains dynamic, and the impressionistic hatching remains a fundamental tool for capturing vibrations of light and color in a landscape rendering charged with freshness and immediacy.
Francesco Maria Pieri was a painter originally from Castagneto Carducci, where he was born in 1941. Much of his career was spent in Livorno, where he died in 1989. He immediately joined the Gruppo Labronico. His research focused primarily on landscapes, which he depicted with a highly naturalistic approach, yet with the freshness of an impressionist brushstroke. He exhibited in various Italian cities, and his works are held in numerous national and international collections.
