Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The seascape in particular is a recurring theme among artists. First, for the lyricism implicit in views overlooking the sea or in romantic images of small harbors. Second, because the depiction of aquatic surfaces allows painters to give free rein to their chromatic flair, thanks to refined interplays of reflections and reverberations. Piero Calandra's favorite subjects often include raging seas, images of the overwhelming force of Nature.
Piero Calandra's work features landscapes of harmonious naturalism, often agitated by the force of the elements. A sublime aesthetic, reminiscent of Romanticism, recurs somewhat in his work. However, for all intents and purposes, Piero Calandra's paintings are characteristic and picturesque, interpreted with a rapid and immediate technique that lends freshness to the scene. The setting is essentially figurative, but the artist reveals some impressionistic influences in his interpretation of the reflections of light on the water and the vibrations of the sun on the rocks. The liveliness of the representation is reinforced by the consistent tonal unity of the entire painted surface, in which space is measured precisely through light, creating subtle chromatic gradations.
Piero Calandra displays a solid training, evident in the sophisticated technique with which he creates his landscapes. In his formal interpretation, he possesses a certain taste for the Romantic aesthetics of the sublime and the picturesque, which translates, formally, into a clear Impressionist influence in his brushwork.
