Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. For the painters of the so-called "Livorno School," of which Piero Pastacaldi is a prominent representative, landscape is the primary subject of their research, drawing their artistic practice from the Macchiaioli tradition and Post-Impressionism.
Piero Pastacaldi, as we can see from this work, demonstrates an extraordinary pictorial technique based, first and foremost, on a solid structure determined by the application of color. It is precisely through this framework that the artist achieves pinnacles of extreme precision in the details, resulting in an exquisitely realistic and naturalistic interpretation of his subjects. The pictorial application demonstrates the high technical quality of Piero Pastacaldi's paintings, a pictorial conception that, in the finest tradition of the Livorno school, harks back to the Macchiaioli and Post-Impressionism in general. His touch is soft, composed of light patches that perfectly blend objects into space, creating an atmosphere of great tonal coherence. Light is thus used to further unify the painted surface, creating a skillful orchestration of shadows. Pastacaldi's palette is also consistent with his aesthetic, adopting highly realistic and naturalistic chromaticism.
Piero Pastacaldi was born in Livorno in 1945. He began painting at a young age, following the tradition of brushwork, typical of the Livorno school. His first exhibition was in 1968, when he participated in the "Rotonda di Ardenza" National Exhibition of Contemporary Art in Livorno. During the 1970s and 1980s, Piero Pastacaldi traveled extensively between the United States and Europe, a formative experience that led him to develop his own synthesis of the "Livorno" style. In 1984, during an Expo in Florence, he met the gallery owner David Lester, with whom he began an intense collaboration. In 1995, he exhibited numerous works at the World Festival Fusion Kawagushi in Tokyo, receiving great critical and public acclaim.
