Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

Landscape painting, as interpreted by artist Piero Sbano, always takes on tones of lightness and gentleness. Formally, this means emptying objects of their mass and weight to transfigure them into pure chromatic vibrations. This is precisely what happens in this painting, where all the landscape elements are rendered with a vibrant and synthetic brushstroke. Thus, the canvas is divided into three sections, in order to exploit the expressive potential of different brushstrokes. They range from the more animated hatching of the vegetation in the foreground to the dynamic and iridescent stripe of the sky, passing through the very light nuance of the mountains in the distance. Everything is executed with an accentuated syntheticism that reduces the landscape to its purest essence, in search of a representation imbued with primary values.

Piero Sbano was born in Paola in 1931 and passed away in 2013. He studied architecture at the University of Rome. From 1955 to 1959, he studied at the French Academy in Rome. He received numerous awards and honors in regional and national art exhibitions. His works are held in museums including the Civic Museum of Noto, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Bagheria at Villa Cattolica, the Museum of Modern Sacred Art in Palermo, the Museum of Modern Art in Recanati (Pesaro), and the Museum of Modern Art in San Marino.
