Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. Piero Semeraro's pictorial production is distinguished not only by a predilection for landscapes, but also by delightful scenes of city life. Horses are also a recurring subject in this painter's work.
In this work, the painter Piero Semeraro displays a certain adherence to a post-Impressionist style. The scene is depicted in a composition with a shallow depth of field. The perception of forms and spaces is thus left entirely to the painter's hand, which, with broad brushstrokes that leave thick, textured touches on the panel, defines the essence of the depicted subject, transcending its phenomenological reality. The image appears grainy; rather than a tangible presence, it almost seems as if it were recomposed in memory. From a formal standpoint, we can see how adopting this pictorial style allows Piero Semeraro to create, in this painting, a vibrant polychromy in a realistic description yet vibrant with emotion and lyricism.
Piero Semeraro was born in Trieste in 1914. He worked for a long time in Pisa with the Il Navicello gallery and was closely associated with the artistic scene in Livorno. His career is closely linked to that of the Livorno painter Gino Romiti. For these reasons, his pictorial language tends toward post-impressionism, characterized by a brushstroke.
