Description of the work
Description of the work
The son of a renowned tapestry weaver, Pieter van Aelst studied under Bernard van Orley and subsequently spent time in Italy before moving to Antwerp in 1527, where he became a master painter and printer. Six years later, he moved to Constantinople for a year to work on a tapestry commission, and in 1544, he opened a studio in Brussels where he created his works. His students included Gillis van Coninxloo, Willem Key, Nicolas Lucidel, Hans Vredeman de Vries, and Michiel Coxcie. He also taught Pieter Bruegel the Younger and Jan Brueghel the Elder. He was also the uncle of Joachim Beuckelaer. In particular, van Aelst is known for his creations inspired by the treatises on architecture and art written by Sebastiano Serlio, with which he played a crucial role in the diffusion of the Renaissance ideal and in the transition from the late Gothic style predominant in his country at the time. He created exquisite decorations on the occasion of the entry (1549) of Philip II of Spain into the city of Antwerp.
