Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. Pietro Barucci's entire pictorial production focuses on landscape, particularly his subjects inspired by the rural areas around Rome, which he captured with his exquisite realist language.
The language of artist Alberto Pietro Barucci harks back to a late Romantic era in which landscape was still conceived according to a classical composition, yet simultaneously sought a modern execution based on the complexity of perception inherent in the human gaze, seeking a deeper realism in representation. Indeed, his entire style is characterized by a lively and dynamic pictorial style, rich in atmospheric and luminous vibrations that hark back to a concept of en plein air painting. The painter, therefore, places great emphasis on a synthetic rendering of the subject. The plain is delineated with a very fluid, almost patchy brushstroke, while the cloudy sky is charged with thick, dense brushstrokes. But at a glance, Pietro Barucci's depiction of landscape always conveys a sense of profound realism and naturalistic rendering: we perceive this especially in the subtle tonal transitions with which the artist depicts the changing light of the sky.
Pietro Barucci was a Roman painter born in 1845 and died in 1917. He was a pupil of Achille Vertunni, through whom he was introduced to landscape painting and from whom he inherited his extraordinary realist language. In Rome, he participated in the Exhibitions of the Society of Amateurs and Cultivators of Fine Arts in 1880, 1885, 1891, and continuously from 1900 to 1908. He was present at international events such as those in Chicago in 1893, in St. Petersburg in 1902, and at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris in 1907.
