Description of the work
Description of the work
A subject that stands out from the themes typically depicted by Pietro Cavallero, the depiction of Native Americans in art history has always been controversial and debated. This is obviously because the image was distorted by stereotypes that still linger in our culture today. The most common depictions were those of the "noble savages," men who, despite being primitive, boasted a noble and pure relationship with nature, or warmongers, ferocious warriors seeking wealth. In this case, the painter Pietro Cavallero chose to depict what appears to be a tribal chief with a large feathered headdress. The realistic style found in Cavallaro's painting clashes with a subject far removed from his experience and his style. The brushstrokes, once again, are swift, lending a natural feel to the painting. The figure stands out against a green background, with a foamy, airy surface. The figure, with its well-defined contours, finds a sense of balance within the canvas, also capturing a subtle sheen. The colors are harmonious and well-balanced across the figure. The palette the painter chose for the depiction, featuring warm tones of forest green, beige, and white, blends well with the figure of the native; this stylistic choice undoubtedly aims to highlight the natural environment in which it is set. Pietro Cavallero was a controversial figure. In the late 1960s, he was implicated in a series of crimes, including robberies and kidnappings. After he was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment in Porto Azzurro, art became his means of redemption. His pictorial production, with naive tendencies, also reveals a picturesque flair. In his formal interpretation, we see a clear impressionistic influence in his brushstrokes.
