The seated woman portrayed by Pietro Cavallero revisits an ancient theme in art history: nudity. Since ancient times, nudity has been depicted as a sign of splendor, strength, but also vulnerability, especially in the contemporary era. The seated woman sensually behaves like an odalisque, a renowned figure associated with the Ottoman Empire. In the Western world, and especially in Western painting, the odalisque symbolized Orientalism, emphasizing both the exoticism and sensuality of the Oriental woman, a highly alluring figure in Western eyes. Pietro Cavallero thus depicts the female figure as if she were within a comfortable space revealed by an open curtain. The nude celebrates the human form, doing justice to the beauty and perfection of the body, an expression of sensuality that challenges social and cultural norms. Ultimately, the theme reflects on human vulnerability by exploring different perspectives. From the Venus de Milo to Lucien Freud's psychological representation of the body, the female nude offers a variety of meanings that still resonate in contemporary art today. Pietro Cavallero's portrayal of the female body conveys a powerful sensuality. The woman is depicted within a context of strong tones and a comfortable appearance. The rendering of pictorial depth is defined and proportionate, with a figure at ease within the context. What stands out, immersed in the red of the canvas, are the highlights cast by the solid white of the curtain and the bonnet worn by the woman in the foreground. Another element is the gradation of color from orange to reddish tones, imbuing the canvas with emotional intensity. Pietro Cavallero was a controversial figure. In the late 1960s, he was implicated in a series of crimes, including robberies and kidnappings. After he was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment in Porto Azzurro, art became his means of redemption. His pictorial production, with naive tendencies, also reveals a picturesque flair. In his formal interpretation, we see a clear impressionistic influence in his brushstrokes.
