Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The work is a clear example of an Expressionist landscape. Reality is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with a remarkable exercise in reduction. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with no concessions to spatial depth. The landscape is constructed through a layering of material color. The hues themselves have no connection whatsoever with reality, lending themselves to a more spiritual than naturalistic interpretation. The composition, built on overlapping chromatic zones, is so synthetic that it points towards Abstract Expressionism.
Pietro De Simone was born in Palazzolo Milanese in 1921. He studied under Francesco De Rocchi, Ottavio Steffenini, and Ugo Vittore Bartolini at the Brera Art School, where he earned his diploma in art. He successfully attended the Scuola Superiore degli Artefici – Reale Accademia di Belle Arti Brera – under the guidance of Gino Moro. He graduated in Architecture from the Milan Polytechnic. He had his debut solo exhibition in 1945 in Milan. He participated in group shows, awards, and thematic exhibitions. His career continued with solo exhibitions.
