Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
In this painting, artist Pietro Galanti demonstrates remarkable pictorial technique, allowing him to achieve a perfectly naturalistic rendering of the subject. The woman appears in a three-quarter view, with a slight and natural twist of the head and torso. There is great precision and richness of detail, both in the physiognomy and in the clothing. In addition to this meticulous attention to detail, the painter also stands out for his loose brushstrokes, creating a delicate softness in the modeling. The forms dissolve into a delicate impressionistic rendering that serves to characterize the subject with luminous vibrations, ensuring a fresher execution. Furthermore, the subject's volumes blend smoothly with the decontextualized space of the background. The use of light is highly skilled, enhancing the figure's sculptural consistency. The light comes from our left, leaving the area of the face to our right in shadow. The demeanor and the serious, yet serene expression indicate this painting as a product of official portraiture.
Pietro Galanti was a painter from Brescia, born in 1885 and died in 1973. He trained in the studio of the architect Dabbeni and exhibited his first works in his hometown in 1909. He fought in the First World War, but resumed his artistic pursuits after the conflict. In 1928, he participated in the first Brescia Triennale and won the portrait prize at the 1930 Venice Biennale. He exhibited again at the Galleria Campana in 1931 and 1932. Pietro Galanti's paintings included numerous landscapes and still lifes, but he specialized primarily in portraiture.
