This pair of works exemplifies why Piero La Rosa can rightfully be considered a master of watercolor. In these two paintings, the artist draws inspiration from two very classic and traditional subjects: landscape and the study of the human figure. In both cases, Piero La Rosa demonstrates that his watercolor technique has reached the pinnacle of formal perfection.
Artist Piero La Rosa, specializing in watercolor painting, has masterfully interpreted this technique, enhancing its characteristics in a modern and original vision. This can be seen in his landscapes, genre scenes, and studies of the human figure: the painter begins with reality and transfigures it into the intense expressionism of his watercolor technique. Reality thus becomes a total pictorial vibration with decidedly existential overtones, the fruit of an exercise in pure perception on the part of the artist. Formally, this is expressed by maximizing the expressive potential of diluted color. Piero La Rosa's refined sensibility manifests itself in recording the effect of light on objects, yet this exercise is carried out with a strong poetic sense that shapes the representation of sensory data. Thus, light almost dissolves objects, transferring them to the timeless dimension of memory. Light and color act in unison, and this enhances the art of watercolor in a coherent representation that maintains its connection to reality while translating it into a highly lyrical dimension.
Piero La Rosa is an artist from Soverato. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome under the guidance of Franco Gentilini and is active on the national and international art scene. In the 1980s, he was a member of the "Painters at Cinecittà" group and the Association of One Hundred Painters of Via Margutta in Rome. Group and solo exhibitions have been held in Ferrara, at the Chiostrino di San Romano, Rome's Galleria dei Leoni, Via Margutta, Catanzaro's Provincial Hall, Rome's American Embassy, Santaseverina Castle, Squillace Archaeological Park, Gurdavalle Pietrarotta Museum, the Galleries of the Monumental Complex of San Giovanni-Catanzaro, the Palazzo delle Culture in Squillace, the Don Bosco High School in Montalto Uffugo, the Villa Comunale (Naval League headquarters) in Soverato, and Le Castella in Isola Capo Rizzuto. His works have been published in specialized magazines.
