Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
The human body is central to Pietro Lista's artistic work, but the image is filtered through two stages. First, he focuses on the human body as something inanimate, incomplete, lacking parts. Pietro Lista's subjects resemble mannequins or Greek statues. The second stage involves a significant recontextualization that formally leads to the complete emptying of volumes. The body is outlined practically in negative, with an uncertain and fragile line that determines an expressiveness entirely peculiar to Pietro Lista's artistic production. The composition is extremely painterly, almost gestural.
Pietro Lista was born in Castiglione del Lago in 1941. His various exhibitions include: a solo show at the Bosquet Gallery in Paris in 1971; his participation in the Rome Quadrennial in 1975; his participation in the Michetti Prize in 1980; his solo show at the Trans/Form Gallery in Paris in 1983, and a group show at the Galerie K in Tokyo in 1993. In 1993, he founded the MMMAC (Museum of Minimal Materials of Contemporary Art) in Paestum.
