Description of the work
The subject of the work refers to the theme of the Guardian Angel, who, according to Christian tradition, accompanies each person in life, helping them through difficulties and guiding them toward God. The Guardian Angel's primary purpose is to keep the faithful away from temptation and sin, and to guide their souls toward eternal salvation in Heaven. A secondary purpose is the fulfillment and earthly happiness of the individual, transcending human weakness and misery. In the history of sacred art, this is a rather rare iconographic theme, which is perfectly expressed in the work in question. The Angel is depicted accompanying a child with a protective gesture.
An extremely eclectic figure in the artistic world, Pietro Pezzotta fueled his pictorial production with numerous sources, among which inspiration from the art of the past undoubtedly stands out. In the case of this Guardian Angel, a clear reference to the seventeenth-century tradition is evident. Indeed, we can see how the artist follows the aesthetic canons, first Renaissance and then Classicist in general, of a monumental rendering of the figure. The angel, in particular, is characterized by ample volumes, whose plasticity is emphasized by the loose draperies. Furthermore, still following the canons of classicist-style naturalism, the figure is immersed in a natural landscape, with the background defined by rocky connotations. The strong dynamism of the figure, due both to the complexity of the draperies and, above all, to the complex torsion of the body, reveals a strong Baroque influence on the part of the artist.
The work is attributed to Pietro Pezzotta, painter and sculptor (Villa Serio 1914-1998). He attended the Giacomo Carrara Academy in Bergamo and graduated in June 1941 with a degree and a silver medal. He painted portraits of Popes John XXIII and Paul VI. He held solo exhibitions and participated in art events in Italy and abroad (mainly Paris, Venice, and Bergamo), receiving significant prizes and awards. In 1959, the Bergamo-born painter spent about twenty days in Liguria, in a town that would become one of his favorite destinations: Bordighera. The characteristic beauty and colorful views of the town, overlooking the sea, would captivate Pezzotta, who returned to the Ligurian village every summer for 25 years to find inspiration. Another place dear to the artist was Serina, a small mountain village in the province of Bergamo, where from 1949 to 1994 he held his regular summer solo exhibition.
