Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s and encompassed all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike and visionary dimension. Pietro Raimondo D'Aragona focused his research on surreal landscapes, which draw inspiration from the perception of reality, but transfigured by the artist's unconscious.
Pietro Raimondo D'Aragona's pictorial language relies primarily on the expressive qualities of color. The drawing structure and perspective grid are completely dismantled to make way for the force of the brushstrokes. Indeed, the vigor with which D'Aragona creates his works is such that it verges on the gesturality typical of Abstract Expressionism. However, the artist maintains a connection with phenomenal reality because even with his colorful, highly textured brushstrokes, he manages to delineate the essence of the subject, imbuing it with expressive vigor. Overall, there is an accentuation of color synthesis. The rendering of the object is abstract, determined by large, contrasting brushstrokes. In this Expressionist context, color takes on aggressive, Fauvist tones, generating the violent contrasts sought by the painter. The meaning of color, in fact, goes far beyond naturalism and takes on a highly symbolic, evocative, and spiritual significance.
Pietro Raimondo d'Aragona, born in Italy in 1942, of Spanish origins, has a degree in Sociology. He began his artistic career in the 1960s. In 1987, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Interamerican University of Florida (Department of State, USA) and was appointed Advisor for Art and Literature at Dominion University of Canada. He has held solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad, receiving several awards.
