Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Pietro Sabbatini's works demonstrate the artist's post-Impressionist maturity. The composition, whether in the series dedicated to horses, a portrait, or a landscape, is compressed into the foreground, allowing no spatial depth. The painter's aim is not to capture the sensory aspect of the subject, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstroke, rich in texture, intervenes, fleshing out the objects, breaking them down into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life within them. The sensory aspect, therefore, is completely transcended in a complex conception of pictorial practice in which the artist's gestures themselves play a fundamental role. We also find in Sabbatini a certain tendency to structure things according to geometric principles that hark back to Cézanne. From a chromatic point of view, the entire surface of the work is in tune with a balanced range of references and correspondences with a predilection for earthy colours and subdued tones.
Pietro Sabbatini, a Venetian painter born in 1930, is an artist devoted to fairly traditional genres, such as landscapes, portraits, and equestrian figures. His style tends toward post-impressionism, with some influence from the French artist Paul Cézanne.
